What Every Local Business Website Actually Needs

BrandonFounder, Footfall Studio4 min read

A while back we wrote about whether your small business actually needs a website at all. If you've decided yes, the next question is usually the harder one: what should it actually do?

Most local business owners have seen websites that look brilliant and sites that generate genuine enquiries. Those two things aren't always the same website. Here's the honest checklist, from someone who builds them.

It has to load fast, on a phone

Most of your customers will find you on their phone, standing outside a shop, searching in the car, scrolling on the sofa. If your site takes more than a couple of seconds to load, or the text is too small to read without pinching and zooming, most people won't stick around to find out how good you actually are.

Mobile-first isn't a buzzword. It means the phone version was designed first, not squeezed in as an afterthought once the desktop version was finished.

It has to make getting in touch easy

This sounds obvious, and yet it's the single biggest thing local business websites get wrong. A contact form buried three clicks deep, a phone number that's an image instead of a tappable link, an enquiry that lands in an inbox nobody checks.

A good local business site puts a way to get in touch on every page. Click to call. A short quote form, not a ten-field essay. And whoever's building it should be honest with you about where those enquiries actually land, not just that they've been "set up."

It has to say what you actually do, in plain English

Clever copy is fine once the basics are covered. But the first thing a visitor needs to know, in the first few seconds, is what you do and where you do it. "We deliver bespoke solutions" tells nobody anything. "Electricians covering Consett and Stanley" tells them exactly what they need to know.

The best local websites are often built from real reviews and real customer language, not marketing jargon. What your actual customers say about you, in their own words, usually sells better than anything a business owner would write about themselves.

It has to show you're a real, active business

An "About" page with a proper photo. Recent reviews, not three from four years ago. A blog or updates section that shows there's actually someone behind the business, not a site that was built once in 2019 and forgotten about.

This matters for trust, and it matters for Google. Sites that stay a little bit active tend to be treated better than ones that go quiet.

It has to be set up properly behind the scenes

This is the bit most business owners never see, and it's exactly why a lot of DIY website builds fall short. A domain registered correctly, in your name. A proper email address that matches your business, not a personal Gmail. Basic SEO set up from day one, not bolted on months later once someone notices the site isn't showing up anywhere.

None of this needs to be complicated or expensive. It just needs to be done properly, once, at the start.

What it doesn't need

You don't need twelve pages if your business only needs three. You don't need a live chat bot if you'll never staff it. You don't need every feature a template throws in for free. The best local business websites do a small number of things well, rather than a long list of things badly.
